Why is it important to dry logs?
Here at Northumberland Logs, we know the benefits that dry logs make to our customers;
- Higher heat output: Drying our logs helps to reduce the moisture, making our logs burn more efficiently.
- Cleaner burn: Dry logs mean less moisture, resulting in less smoke, soot, and creosote.
- Easier to light: Dry logs catch alight faster and burn more reliably.
Kiln dry logs
Kiln drying is a controlled drying method that uses a high-heat kiln to remove moisture from our freshly cut logs. Our logs are placed in a large kiln where temperatures are carefully regulated to dry them to an ideal moisture content of under 20%, making them ready to burn as soon as they arrive to our customers.
What are the benefits of kiln dry logs:
- Consistently low moisture
- Ready to use on delivery
- Burn hotter and longer
- Less smoke, ash, and creosote build-up
Season dry logs
Seasoning is the more traditional method of drying logs naturally over time. Our freshly cut wood is stacked and stored in a well-ventilated area, allowing the air and sunlight to gradually reduce the moisture of our logs over 6 to 24 months.
What are the benefits of season dry logs:
- Natural drying process
- Lower energy needed for production
- Affordable alternative to kiln drying
